How Does Your Mobile Phone Work?

When you speak on your phone, your voice is picked up by your phone's microphone. The MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) of the microphone converts your voice into a digital signal with the help of sensors and IC. In digital signals, your voice remains as zero and one.

An antenna inside the phone picks up these zeros and sends them in the form of electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves change in the combination of amplitude, frequency, phase.

For example, In the case of frequencies zero is transmitted using a low and a high frequency. So, if you find a way to transfer these electronic magnetic waves to your friend's phone, you will be able to place a call.

However, electromagnetic waves are unable to travel long distances. They tend to lose their energy due to the presence of physical objects, electrical equipment, and some environmental factors.

In fact, even if no such problem occurs, the electromagnetic waves cannot last forever because of the curved structure of the earth. To overcome these problems, cell towers were introduced using the concept of cellular technology.

In cellular technology, a geographic region is divided into hexagonal codes with each cell having its own tower and frequency slot.

Typically, these cell towers are connected by wires or more specifically by optical fiber cables. These optical fiber cables are placed under land or sea to provide national or international connections.

The electromagnetic waves generated by your phone are picked up by the tower and converted into high-frequency light.

This light signal is taken to the base transmitter box at the base of the tower for processing, after processing, your voice signal is transmitted to the destination tower.

The destination tower spreads it outward in the form of electromagnetic waves and receives the signal on your friend's phone.

This signal goes through a reverse process and your friend hears your voice. So, it is true that mobile communications are not completely wireless, they also use a wired medium.

This is how communication is done on mobile and your friend listens to you.
